Will Sansa Finally Take Control of Her Own Destiny in Game of Thrones Season 6?
GoT fans – if you haven’t finished Season 5 yet, go do it and come back! This post may contain some spoilers for you.
As a member of the unluckiest family in Westeros, Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) just can’t catch a break. Given, she hasn’t been beheaded, she wasn’t tricked into watching her her whole family murdered just before having her throat slit. But her marriage to Ramsay Bolton was one of several associations with abusive men. When she finally escaped Ramsey with the help of Theon at the very end of Season 5, it left us hoping that she had finally taken control of her own destiny.
We all watched as she was used as a pawn in the Game of Thrones by pretty much everyone around her. Under Littlefinger’s wing, it seemed like she was finally coming into her own – until she finds out that once again she’s being used and must now marry one of the most notoriously cruel man in Westeros. Now that she’s left him and is presumably on the run with Theon/Reek, will she finally learn to fend for herself? Or will she once again make the mistake of misplacing her trust?
Sophie Turner shed a light light on this question at the Entertainment Weekly SAG Awards party: “This season is a really, really big one for Sansa,” Turner explained. “It’s probably her best season yet. It’s her really coming into her own. She, this season, really commands the respect that she deserves and she grabs hold of it and she runs with it and it’s really good.”
“Fans will finally [get] that storyline that you’ve been craving for the past five seasons…it feels like it’s been building up and up to that. You can only suffer so much before she finally gets…the respect that she deserves.” -Sophie Turner speaking about Sansa Stark’s Season 6 storyline
Although we expect things won’t be easy for Sansa (or anyone else, for that matter), a few pieces are in place to help her take her rightful place. Brienne of Tarth may finally be the ally and teacher Sansa needs to protect herself from being constantly taken advantage of. If she heads north, she may run into zombie Jon Snow or Bran (remember Bran?) and will join up with them to take Winterfell back from the awful, terrible, no good Boltons.
Because Sansa’s Game of Thrones storyline deviates so much from that of the books, we can only guess what the series has in store. We hope they’ll keep her on the trajectory of growing into a stronger, more independent character. As she says in A Storm of Swords: “My skin has gone from porcelain, to ivory, to steel.”
What’s the storyline you’re craving for Sansa? Tell us in the comments.
