Premier Date for Game of Thrones: No One Knows Anything

Game of Thrones Season six is just around the corner now (well, that’s not true, but it’s closer than it was yesterday!) with a release date of April 24th. This is the first season that will completely overtake the books in terms of plot progression, so alas, no more non-book-reader red wedding style reaction videos filmed by cruel book reader friends who knew what was coming.

In George R.R. Martin’s blog, “Not a Blog,” he said a few weeks ago that Winds of Winter wasn’t done yet. I feel bad for George, the pressure must be insane.

“You’re disappointed, and you’re not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed… but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me.” -GRRM

Still geeking out over here about that drinking horn on the cover…

As he reports, he’s still months away from finishing, but only if it goes well. He points out that this is maybe the first time ever that a movie or TV show came out as its book was still being written, and apologetically adopts the attitude of “it is what it is.” He calls the phenomenon a butterfly effect, and says the books and show will now be two parallel storylines where different characters are dead and alive at different times.

To help clarify, he leaves us with the question of “how many children did Scarlett O’Hara have?” Which has two different answers depending on whether you read the book or saw the film. Basically, the books and the show will both be amazing, although different (perhaps even more now than before), which means even more GoT to love. In the end, according to showrunners, both stories will match each other nicely.

As is to be expected, nutty (but entirely plausable in this universe) fan theories abound. My favorite is that Ned’s not dead. That’s cute guys, I hope you get your wish. Roose Bolton is an immortal skin stealer and/or white walker? The Hound’s coming back? Daenerys finally crosses the narrow sea? All of those would be awesome. Can’t wait to see which ones come true.
